                                                             CAREER VS HEALTH

Mr. Basu, at 45 is working with a multinational company at a very senior level. He has been a very dedicated and hardworking employee of the company for the last 8yrs. But for the past few months he is not able to give his 100% to the organization as before, the reason being he is not keeping well. His blood pressure has gone up, his stress level has increased due to which he loses his temper very frequently and this is hampering his relation with his juniors and colleague. Few days back he also had a minor chest pain. He ignored his blood pressure and stress level at first but after the chest pain and because of his family pressure he went to the doctor.

The doctor suggested Mr. Basu to get few tests done. After having a look at the reports of the tests the doctor inquired Mr. Basu of his lifestyle, like his food habits, his regular routine which he follows. According to Mr. Basu he leads an eventful and demanding life. He considered himself lucky to be doing something he really likes. As a matter of fact he doesn’t get enough time to spend with his family. However, he justified it by saying that what he is doing is only to give his family a life full of comfort and luxury. He took pleasure in the late night corporate parties after the office hours, where he enjoyed whole hearted dinner along with a few pegs of liquor. These corporate parties were an added bonus for him as he is a food lover but hardly had the time to have a proper lunch most of the days due to the work pressure. The only thing he doesn’t like about these parties is that they ended very late and he couldn’t have enough sleep after a tiresome day. When the Doctor asked Mr. Basu’s way of keeping fit, he replied that he hardly gets the time to exercise and feels he doesn’t need one too. Mr. Basu very proudly declared that no matter whatever he eats - junk or fatty food or whatever amount of alcohol he takes he is lucky enough not to put on the extra kilos. While discussing about his family life with the doctor, Mr. Basu confessed that due to work pressure he is getting detached from his family and friends. As he is not able to give time for anything else than his work, it’s hampering his relationship with his dear ones. All these ongoing family problems are keeping him under lot of stress.

Once hearing all these, the doctor was quite sure that the reason for Mr. Basu’s ill health was majorly this sedentary life style. The problem faced by Mr. Basu has become very common these days to lot of successful employees at his age. It is very difficult striking a balance between professional and personal life. Creating a balance in ones’ life is a continuous process.

There was a time when employees had scheduled work durations for 8 to 9 hrs a day and they could strike a balance between professional and personal life.

However in today’s time the scenario is more complex as the competition is getting tougher day by day. Everyone is pushing hard for a better career, status and luxury and in this process many are hampering their health as well as their personal life.

It is necessary to have a perfect balance between work, family and health, both mental and physical. In my opinion there are some suggestions to help you find the balance that is best for you:-

1)     Set Limits at Work

Sometimes it’s necessary to say no to certain requests. One should prepare a list of work (both professional and personal) and set priorities on the thing that matters most and say no to the things that are not that important. It will help you to finish your work at time and leave for home.

2)     Treat Personal Time As Seriously As Professional Time

To strike a balance in life it’s very important to treat one’s personal commitments as seriously as his professional ones. If you have promised your child that you will attend his/her sport’s day ceremony, you should treat it as a commitment which can not be shrugged off for some other work. One should always keep in mind that just being present physically will not help to strike a balance in one’s life – you have to be present mentally as well.

3)     Creating a Relaxing Atmosphere

One can create a relaxing atmosphere by taking out a little time for family and for self. Following points may help you to have an idea about creating a relaxing atmosphere:

Get enough sleep.

Spend time with family and friends (watching movies, weekend outings, etc). Develop a hobby like reading, listening to music, drawing, writing, etc. Travel once in every quarter (countryside/ hill stations)

4)     Eating Habits

It is very important to have balanced diet to keep yourself healthy. If possible take a help of a dietician to choose the right diet plan for you. The following points will help you to stay fit:

One should take small meals at regular intervals.

Drink at least enough water to keep yourself hydrated.

Try to avoid oily and fatty foods as much as possible.

Try to eat a lot of green vegetables and fruits

5)     Exercise

Everybody knows that exercise is necessary, it not only keeps the body fit but it actually reduces the stress level and keeps the mind fit too. You should consult a good physician (in case you have any prior aliment) & a good trainer for choosing the right exercise that will fit you and your life style.

All said and done though this may seem very difficult in the beginning, with a little hard work & willpower each one of us can maintain a healthy balance between our professional and personal life.

TEMP. STAFFING-A NEW PERSPECTIVE

Kaushik Mukherjee is an ITI passed electrician. He was working with a small contractor in a factory to take care of the electrical maintenance for the organization. Not only he was getting a salary that was less than the minimum wages but also there was no PF/ESI or any other facilities. One-day kaushik gets a call from one of the leading Temp. Staffing Company to work as an electrician for a facility management company with a salary of Rs.5100/- along with the other benefits Like PF/ESI, Incentives and annual bonus. Like our friend Kaushik, there are many good and efficient workers working under these types of small contractor and get exploited by them.

Temp Staffing is a solution for ensuring right kind of job for right kind of people. It’s also ensuring that the every worker gets appropriate salary and other facilities like statutory, bonus and medical facilities. Last 10 years, Temp. Staffing is a very effective solution for the sectors like, Manufracruring, IT, facility Management, and Service sector and for many other sectors also. Temporary staffing not only increases new working opportunity but also helps organization to save anywhere between 25-35% in their total wage bills and also helping companies to identify requisite talent with specific skills a per their own requirement.

In India the numbers of temporary staffing is increasing rapidly. It was often the case ten or fifteen years ago-so called temp. Staffing were a quick fix during busy work months or temporary coverage during illness, vacation or maternity leave. Today it is safe to say that temps are essential to almost every Indian business or non-business organization.

TEMP. STAFFING-AN ADVANTAGE TO INDUSTRIES:-

Temp staffing or temping, is emerging as the fastest growing recruitment trend in the country. Globally it is a $160 billion business. While third-party contracting is yet to play a dominant role in India, it has gained a foothold with a large number of big and small companies opting to engage workers without the responsibility of managing them. Another positive aspect of the slowdown is that many organizations in the country have been able to control high attrition rates, which is very high across sectors like IT, ITES, Banking, Financial Services and retail. Analysts say, less productive workers seem to be getting removed, while those with proven capabilities would be valuable to the employees.

The main advantages are like: -

A)    It will help organization to take control of their wage bill of the employees.

B)     Take controls of the attrition rates.

C)    Company will find it easy to narrow down on requisite talent while slowdown.

D)    Less compensation than full time employees-helps cuts company costs drastically.

E)     It is very useful for the sectors, which are engaged in numerous short duration projects.

F)     On the legal side, companies who use temps worry less about wrongful termination and harassment lawsuits.

G)    The opportunity for organizations to focus on core area.

TEMP. STAFFING:-AN ADVANTAGE TO THE NEW GENERATION EMPLOYEE:-

Companies aren't the only ones to benefit from Temp Staffing. You may be such kind of person who enjoys a flexible schedule and a varied work environment. Temporary work allows you to hone the skills you have — and learn new ones — while earning a wage that's often comparable or higher to what you can make as a full-time employee. Also there's always a good chance to land up a full time or permanent job through a temporary assignment.

(A)The College Graduates: -
Fresh college graduates always have a tough time to choose a right career or to find a suitable job for themselves at the early stages of their career. They can always go for a temporary assignment to test the particular field which they want to peruse in future. Temp agencies are a great way to test out a career before committing to it. Students also get real-world experience and earn money for their tuition fees.

(B)The retire persons:-

Plenty of retired workers want something to do with their free time. They can always contact to a reputed Temp. Staffing organization and get a job that suits his/her requirement. It will help them to earn some money and share their experience and expertise with the new generation.

(C) Work Life Balance:-

Not only Temp work allows a candidate to earn an income but they can always choose a job that suits their schedule that allows them to be at home when their children are home and take family vacations in accordance to the school calendar. Always remember that different people will have different priorities and at different times of their lives. This practice is widely popular in Europe and USA. It’s still not very used in India till now, but we can always expect to have this kind of scenario in near future in India.

In recent times the numbers of temporary staffing is increasing rapidly in India. In the past, Temp. Staffing were a quick fix during busy working months or temporary coverage during illness, vacation or maternity leave. Today one can say that Temporary Staffing is essential to almost every Indian organization. We can conclude saying the Temp. Staffing is not only beneficial from the companies’ perspective but at the same time it is very useful and effective from the view of an individual as an employee.
